Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Look, I'm gonna be straight with you - Ghostbusters isn't really my thing. I'm more about aliens and explosions than ghosts and comedy. But this one actually worked for me way better than I expected. Instead of trying to remake the original, they made it a proper sequel that respects what came before while doing its own thing. The kid who plays Phoebe absolutely nails it - she's got that nerdy scientist vibe down pat and actually feels like she could be Egon's granddaughter.
The nostalgia hits are done right too. When they fire up the old equipment and you hear those classic sound effects, it genuinely gave me chills. Sure, the small town setting is pretty standard stuff, but the mystery around what grandpa was up to kept me invested. The final act gets a bit too sentimental for my taste, but I get why they went that route - it's about family and legacy and all that.
Even though supernatural comedy isn't my wheelhouse, this felt more like an adventure movie with some laughs thrown in rather than a straight comedy, which probably explains why I didn't hate it. The practical effects mixed with CGI looked solid, and Paul Rudd being Paul Rudd never hurts.
It's a crowd-pleaser that actually earned its nostalgia instead of just banking on it.
